Anna Sewell’s, Black Beauty, is an autobiographical story told by a high-bred horse which undergoes many adventures and encounters both cruelty and kindness. It is a moving account of the horses life and is widely praised as having been inspirational to early animal rights movements. It is also considered to be the first autobiographical work of fiction told from the perspective of an animal. Recently many have mistakenly claimed the War Horse was the first book of it’s kind to do the horse autobiography thing but Anna Sewell got there first, with Black Beauty being published in 1877.
